report-IT is a Client/Server application that allows users to access and evaluate
database data on local machines and both within Local Area Networks
and Wide Area Networks, for example the internet.
The data access and evaluation is report based. Reports can be designed and accessed
via an intuitive and simple to use Graphical User Interface (GUI) offerd by
the Client application and are centrally stored at the Server. This allows
location independent access to those reports.
The report data can be located within any Relational Database that is reachable from the
Server application. Therefore the Server acts as central gateway to any number of
databases. This simplifies the administration of database connections and offers a
whole number of new possibilities of data evaluation, including cross-database
evaluation.
The Server application offers a GUI that allows to administrate users and user groups
as well as database connections and Server settings. Furthermore it provides
possibilities to monitor data access and restrict data access for or to certain users
or user groups.
The following figure depicts the standard three-tier-model that is used as general
concept behind this application.
This concept offers a wide range of possibilities. The implementation of this
application has an emphasis on data and connection security. Administrators are given
a central tool to administrate database access, eliminating the need of dealing with
many distributed machines while users have the possibility to easily access the data
they need, at any time, anywhere and presented in a design of their choice.
