Back to OnLars... Back to the Ireland main page...

Some friends of mine convinced me to join the Drama Society (one of the many Clubs you can find at the College) after I already spent some weeks in Ireland. I have to admit that I was a little bit sceptical in the beginning... but I also have to admit that I loved it in the end. All the sessions were great and the group leader (Seamus O'Rourke) was brilliant.
That's all very nice - but what is the Millenium Show?
You are right to ask this question. The Millenium Show was a big three hour Variety Show that was organised throughout the year and took place on two days in April. The idea was to present the College and all of its Clubs and Societies in one big show to both the public and the people at the College itself. So everyone was invited to participate with whatever act he or she could think of. And there were a lot of different acts. Bands played their songs, sport clubs presented themselves, Diablos were juggled and dances were performed. Of course there was much more to see this evening. And of course there was some Drama...

Now take a look at some of the acts of this evening. And then take an even closer look at the story and the pictures of our play: "Sailor Jacks Return Home"...

Backstage, only a few minutes before the show. Last tests and the final instructions from Seamus to the participating and supporting people. And a lot of people were necessary to organise this!

The Jerry Springer Show. One of the Highlights of the evening, presented by the post graduate students of the College - including Alexi as Snow White. Lovely, isn't he?

Shane. A post graduate student and professional actor, song writer and singer. Not only the (brilliant) MC of the whole show, but also performing one of his own songs and singer for another College band.

And now: "On with the Show!". The Drama Society performed a Mr. Bean sketch, presented a Fashion Show and showed the following Silent Movie Melodrama. But first: "Introduce the cast!"...

The aging parents of Gentle Molly (The sweet, unsullied flower) and Sir Jasper, the evil landlord...

The happy family. Gentle Molly returns home from a walk and introduces Sailor Jack to her (happy) parents. But Jack has no money and so he declares that he will leave for the West Indies to fight some Zulus...

And so the years pass by. Gentle Molly is still waiting for Sailor Jack to return home. It is a cold winter. The old folks huddle together for warmth as a letter arrives from the West Indies, proclaiming the death of Jack who was impaled by Zulus!

Sir Jasper arrives only seconds later to demand the rent. But there is no money and so he decides to take Gentle Molly (the sweet, unsullied flower) in exchange.

But Molly fights Sir Jasper and the evil landlord ties her to the railroad tracks, waiting for the Wexford/Waterford Express to kill Molly. But what is this? Sailor Jack is not dead! He fights Sir Jasper and saves Molly in the last possible moment...

All are very happy and Sailor Jack marries Molly... the end...

And of course there was a big party at the end of the second day of the show...
